Ireland looks to Pakistan to help solve doctor shortage

Irish health officials visit India and Pakistan, find more than 420 experienced doctors willing to work in Ireland.

Express June 21, 2011

The Irish health agency called for help from Pakistani and Indian doctors as local doctors immigrate because of long working hours and poor career prospects, reported the Irish Times.

According to the report, the shortage of junior doctors has become a serious problem in the country.

On a recent trip to India and Pakistan, Irish health officials found more than 420 experienced doctors who, they said, are willing to work in Ireland.

However, the Irish Medical Council said that only 30 of these doctors have applied to register in Ireland.

Local health officials hope that the Irish ministry for health will amend the laws to make it easy for non-European Union doctors to work in the country.

@fajim bawany: Ask from a person who is studying medicine in pakistan. they are spending their own huge money and invaluable time on their education. Our government is not that much welfare that they divert tax payers money to health sector. And secondly what government was paying to doctors before the strike. only 12000 to 18000. equal to the amount a sweeper or a soldier without any qualification earns. i think they earns much more. if a person cannot support his two member family with his pay then i dont think such a profession is worth pursuing here.

The problem is multidimensional.

those who argue for subsidized education for doctors should also look into the matter that Engineer's have more subsidized education than doctors and they are also leaving the country although they have far better pays and working hours than doctors. Even a person who does his Masters in Urdu also enjoys the benefits of subsidized education, because it is the duty of a stat to give better education to its people, then why are you saying doctors should stay here as they are given subsidized education. I think this is non-sense. every professional mind is flying out of Pakistan because of very tough financial situation to live here.

Yes, Irish people are flying from Ireland but these current offers are better for Pakistanis as they have their families here and if you convert Euro's to Rupees then the difference is obvious

I think you can talk someone about staying in a country if you give then the comparable pays according to their profession at least in the region, Just take the example of India 80000 Indian rupees per month (multiply by 2 for Pakistani rupees) for a junior medical officer who is going to start his training.

I think as a Pakistani if we will not start respecting our professionals and their needs then we will face such type of problems.

May Allah Bless our Beloved Country.
