KESC crisis

It would be better if the government could ensure improved deals for outgoing employees.

KARACHI: Over 4,000 KESC employees declared ‘non-core personnel’ were forcibly restored in January when the coalition government restored them under political pressure. This has worsened the prevailing dispute between the government and KESC, since the latter was not ready to accept the surplus personnel voluntarily.

Instead of pressurising KESC management to accept such a large number of surplus employees, who in any case are mostly irregular, it would be better if the government could ensure improved deals for outgoing employees.

Needless to mention here, PIA had also made about 7,000 of its employees redundant through various mandatory and golden handshake schemes during the tenures of Mian Nawaz Sharif and later ex-army dictator General Musharraf in order to make the organisation more effective.
