Sobbing replaces laughter: Moin Akhtar laid to rest

Veteran actor and comedian Moin Akhtar was laid to rest in Malir’s Model Colony Graveyard on Saturday. Hundreds of people belonging to film, drama and theatre attended the funeral. Politicians and even sportsman came to pay homage to the legend.


His funeral prayers were held at Masjid-e-Tauheed in Malir Cantt, near his house. Former singer Junaid Jamshed led them.

A heavy contingent of police was also deployed.

Furqan Haider, a stage drama director and producer, told The Express Tribune, “I have no words to express my sorrow. I felt my legs tremble when his body was being taken to the graveyard.” How can we replace such a great man, he added.

Haider and Moin Akhtar had been friends since 1967. “He was a versatile man. Whatever was assigned to him, he executed it perfectly.”

Actor Behroze Sabzwari said, “I have lost my dearest friend. The entire country is in grief.”

Karachi Arts Council president Muhammad Ahmed Shah said comedy ends today with Moin Akhtar’s death.

Shah said that they will organise a condolence reference for Moin Akhtar in the coming week at the Arts Council and he announced three days of mourning as well, during which all the activities of the council will be suspended.

The comedian is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Former city nazim Mustafa Kamal, Sindh Assembly speaker Nisar Khuhro, provincial Ministers Dr Sagheer Ahmed and Rauf Siddiqi, comedian Omar Sharif, writer Anwar Maqsood and other celebrities attended the funeral.

Karim Khan | 12 years ago | Reply Moin was such a wonderful actor, the pride of Paksitan. But comedy hasn't ended. Remember that Bushra Ansari and Anwar Maqsood are alive.
hina | 12 years ago | Reply the adoration, respect and love showered on him during his lifetime continued in his death, speaks volumes of him as an individual. he has left us physically but his legacy will live on forever. may his soul rest in peace, Ameen.
