The Rangers’ power extension period ended on April 18, and has been renewed by the local government as target killings in Karachi rise.
Express 24/7 correspondent Shaheryar Mirza reports that apart from their power to conduct search and raid operations and arrange security check-posts in Karachi, the Rangers have the authority to engage, detain and interrogate suspects, before handing them over to the police.
These powers have been given under section five of the Anti-terrorism Act of 1997.
The interior ministry of Sindh has also issued notifications in this regard.
The powers of the paramilitary forces were extended in light of the escalated target killings in Karachi.
Killings continue
Five people were killed in different incidents in Karachi.
The body of a police officer was found with the hands and feet tied in Malir graveyard.
Three members of a family were shot dead by unidentified men in the Block 10 area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Police said that four men on two motorcycles opened fire on the car killing all three people on the spot.
In another incident, a man identified as Ibrahim was killed in a firing incident in Ranchore Line.
