Police and peasants

Letter April 06, 2011
While many of the peasants are illiterate, they are becoming aware of their right to own the land they till.

LAHORE: This is with reference to your editorial published on April 1 titled “Denied: The right to own land”. Recently, peasants of Khanewal took out a peaceful rally demanding ownership rights. What was so unfair and wrong with this demand, that the police had to resort to baton charge and tear-gassing of the crowd? Can the police provide any justification for their heavy-handed behaviour?

Maybe our government leaders, comprising mostly of feudal lords, do not realise that while many of the peasants are illiterate, they are becoming aware of their right to own the land they till.
