MUMBAI:

Mumbai was set ablaze in golden glory as history-defying co-hosts India cherished a fairy-tale ending to their campaign after winning the World Cup for the first time since 1983 with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Gautam Gambhir made 97 and captain Mahinder Singh Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 91 off 79 balls as India romped to victory with an emphatic six by the captain, sending waves of triumphant joy across the nation. Sri Lanka, who won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night final, rode on Mahela Jayawardene’s 103 not out off 88 balls to pile up 274 for six in their 50 overs.

Dhoni’s men emulated Kapil Dev’s compatriots who won the 1983 World Cup by beating the West Indies in the final at Lord’s in London. The victory, watched by Indian President Pratibha Patil and Sri Lanka’s

head of state Mahinda Rajapakse, was the first occasion a team had won the tournament on home soil.

“I took a quite few decisions tonight and if we hadn’t won I would have been asked quite a few questions,” said Dhoni, who batted at number five and had selected fast-bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth instead of Ravichandran Ashwin.

“Why no Ashwin? Why Sreesanth? Why no Yuvraj Singh at five? Why did I bat ahead? That pushed me and motivated to do well.” The finale gave Sachin Tendulkar, the world’s most successful Test and one-day batsman, his first World Cup title in six appearances since 1992.

“I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Tendulkar, who again missed out on scoring a landmark 100th international century.

“Winning the World Cup is the ultimate. It is the proudest moment of my life. I could not really hold back my tears.”

India, cheered by a sell-out crowd of 33,000 at the Wankhede stadium, surpassed the challenging target with 10 balls to spare.

The defeat ended Sri Lankan star bowler Muttiah Muralitharan’s dream of being part of a second World Cup-winning team. Muralitharan went wicketless in eight overs to end his career with a record 800 Test and 534 one-day wickets.

This tournament has been crafted to make it a grand fairy tale end for Tendulkar’s world cup career…..So India is bound to win….The itinerary, the grounds, the pitches, the crowd, the tosses, the hawk eye, decisions everything has been made an ally for India and Sachin…so why not….India is going to be a champion……though not fully worthy of being one……Recommend

Saw Indian team putting in their heart n soul in the field and especially the legendary Tendulkar – His brilliant dive to save a sure boundary – I thought, only one thing must be going in his mind, “This is a life time opportunity, lemme put in everything to ensure India wins World Cup when I’m part of the team”

Perhaps Misbah was also thinking somewhat same, “This is a lifetime opportunity, lemme make sure I play as slow as I can so that our team can loose and so that my personal motives get the better of my country’s glory”

Like our Leaders, like our Heroes… Such a pity

Both sides played very well. Victory and defeat are inevitable outcomes of any game. The most important fact of the final was the tense situation that kept the viewers fixed to their screens and no one could opt for any one team as a possible winner till about the second last over, when poor bowling and good batting made the results clear. Well played Sri Lanka, well defended India. The semi-final was easily predictable from the very start of the Pakistan batting, there was no resistance, no show of team spirit. It was a one sided game from the start.
Anyway, let us hope the Cup remains in the Sub-continent. The three co-hosts must be congratulated for their excellent arrangements, without any untoward incident that could spoil the fun. Bangladesh played their most best innings. They were unbelievable.
Our cricket high-ups need to re-think their future strategy and promote a strong team that should play the next three World Cups without any major changes. The senior players need to show mercy on the state of the game and let the youngsters grow.Recommend

Congratulation to indian team and indian nation on this great victory. to be honest, india deserved this worldcup more than anyone and thats because they played like winners especially in the last matches. not many teams stood up to pressure. although my heart was always with pakistan, but my mind told me india should win and will because they were bent upon lifting the cup without making mistakes. as a pakistani i support and cherish this win for indian nation and indian team. very well played guys. well at the end of the day, whosoever plays well, win and everyone should acknowledge that. I think many teams have lessons in this performance especially pakistan. first off, captains are supposed to play from front, leading the team. when india today was struggling at 3 out soon, MS dhoni came in and made sure he kept the wickets and give runs. thats how to lead the team. thats responsibility. remember ponting? thats what he did although it was jus not aussies day. enter pakistan, 4 drop catches, a couple of lucky occassions, 3 to 4 misfielded fours and pathetic fielding with pathetic batting by afridi (mind you he was the captain and he played like an idiot), younis and misbah. pakistan lost the match cuz of its poor batting, pathetic fielding and over confidence of some players like misbah and afridi. frankly pakistan only played good cricket against australia and west indies. against sri lanka, pakistan was only lucky since SL almost snatched the match, aganisty canada they struggled for a while even. and against NZ they were just too over confident. well thats not how you play worldcups. pakistan played bad cricket against india and i think we should learn from that unbiased.

again india played better, it won…

i say all this cuz i love pakistan and i want better from it. but lets accept where we went wrong.Recommend

    Brother.

Come on, that was an uninvited comment. You guys just won the biggest event in Internatioanl Cricket. Why taint your win with such words. You are better than that brother. We common people of India and Pakistan need to stand up against this old and redundant mindset where we both see each another as enemies. This is hurting both the sides. This is only taking our precious resources away from us. We need to see above this. Please, i request, what is the point of saying such things which only hurt other people. Our country is going through a rough patch right now. Your prayers are needed, just like my prayers were with India to lift the World Cup.

It’s time to face some pungent facts about this World Cup 2011. India lifted this cup not with its massive batting capability but it has won by paying huge bribes. The reality is always hard to swallow since India would never be able to even touch this cup if this tournament was held in Australia, England or any country other than Sub-Continent. Money was injected in this game all the way through 6 weeks so that India’s entry into Finals could be made possible. It is kind of shocking that all the top ICC officials are Indians & their job in this World Cup was to get India out of the tournament as Victorious & this World Cup could be the best opportunity for them to play their game as this time World Cup was in their yard & they did it well. As a matter of fact, it was Final & Sri Lanka could easily bowled India out but their skills were contaminated by money which was playing its part.

Thanks for making the world fool… INDIA!Recommend

“When you have such an awesome batting line-up, even 300 is not enough,” Sangakkara said after Sri Lanka lost the World Cup final to India by six wickets last night here at the Wankhede Stadium.

“(Their) batting is unbelievable, best in ODI cricket, they have a good captain. MS is very intelligent, very smart.

He is the epitome of captain cool”, he said.

Thanks to all paki friends for their congratulations. Thanks to shahid afridi for showing sportsman spirit after the match.. he came to home and grilled reporters and all those who hate india for no reason.. sports truly brings nations close.. my indian and paki friends who are making nonsense comments here must realize and put into the action, their duties as a responsible citizen. yes, we suffered kargil or 26/11 by few pakistani’s and still there is a big attitude problem and ignorance in bringing the culprits of 26/11 to the justice.. but is this the end? is there no hope in Pakistan? when Captain Dhoni and Gambhir didn’t lose the hope by loosing Sachin, sehwag so early in chasing a huge task, why should we lose the hope(that’s a lesson)? Yes there is a hope, be it afridi, be it Gilani. and to be very honest we all may get angry, we may abuse each other, but we know that peace is the only solution for the two countries. Pakistan need to do a lot to emerge as a responsible, progressive and peace loving country. Pak(and that means the common people over there, their intellectuals, and the people here who are in touch with the whole world through internet) should overcome from their fear of unknown towards India(this fear factor is used by army and mighty people there to remain in real power) and should work real hard to fight the demons of their country killing the innocents every day. sarhad ke dono aur kai logo ko pta hai ki agr dono desh peaceful environment me rhenge to unki dukane band ho jayegi aur unke khane ke bhi lale pad jayenge.. our real fight is against them.. WE THE YOUTH OF BOTH COUNTRIES NEED TO SEE A VISION FOR THE FUTURE.. A REAL AND HONEST VISION.. FEARLESS VISION.. need not to get into any Romanticism but need to work what we(all the individuals) can do by keeping our minds open and hearts big.. Recommend

@Anoop cut the Ajmal Kasab thing. We all know how clean India is too. There are thousands of Indian spies and terrorists who have been caught in Pakistan and have languished in Pakistani jails for decades. I think the story of ‘Kashmir Singh’ will fascinate the likes of you. Here’s what Mr Singh said after being released mercifully after 35 yrs (thanks to our big heartedness): “I spent 35 years in Pakistani jails and kept my mouth shut. I did my duty.”

The problems exists on both sides of the border. India and Indians, especially people like you, also need to get rid of your anti sentiment and self-righteous attitude which I believe you learn from ur parents from the minute you are born. Recommend

Dhoni who had a mediocre tournament took the bull by the horns when situation demanded. He changed the batting order and came to bat early when his national team needed it. That was courageous as he has not been in good form. However, he lead by example and the captain-ship was exemplary and made the difference between victory and defeat.

Both Dhoni and Afridi did not score much in the whole tournament but Dhoni came big on the biggest occasion. In fact our Boom Boom never scored more than 37 runs (against Zimbabwe) in the four world cup he has played! Never a fifty even against lowly rated teams in dozens of WC matches he has played.

I never had much to do with Dhoni, but he let his bat do the talking. He showed the difference between man and boys on the big occasion. With his usual batting top guns silenced he carried the team on his shoulders without a mistake. It is his flexibility, adaptability and performance from the front foot by example, that won India the World Cup.

Now India has won 60 overs, 50 overs, & 20 overs championships and are number one in the world. With the progress in science and technology India is making, I am sure their future looks bright. Congratulations, India you deserve the win! The best team of the tournament won.

    @Richard:

You say India bribed its way to the cup and had it been held in Australia or anyone else, it wouldn’t have won. Richard, you need to go the nearest psychiatrist, coz India first won the WC in England in 1983. For your information, this is the first time a host nation has won the title. Didn’t India host the WC (Reliance Cup) in 1987 when Australia won? Couldn’t it have bribed its way then? Besides, even 1996 world cup was held in the sub-continent – why didn’t Pakistan win it, especially when your guys are one of the best “fixers” in the business? And, by the way, if you knew this “fact” upfront, why didn’t you break this news to the PCB who would have then disallowed that Pakistani team from participating in the tournament. At least that would have saved you the shame of losing to India. Grow up; jealously won’t help you to win the WC and shall not dilute our cup of joy.Recommend
