No to HEC devolution

Letter April 01, 2011
The move to transfer the functions of the HEC to the provinces is not a good decision and should be stopped.

LAHORE: This is with reference to your editorial of March 31 titled “Devolution of the HEC”. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is the primary autonomous regulatory body of higher education in Pakistan and its main purpose is to help universities improve their quality of education, research and development. In that context, the government’s planned move to transfer the functions of the HEC to the provinces is not a good decision and should be stopped.

If the HEC is to be tampered with, the best solution, as pointed in your editorial, is to appoint sub-committees at the provincial level who can then inform the Commission of the needs of each province.
