Government College University: Debating Society honours winners

A lunch reception was organised by the Government College University Debating Society to honour its winning members since September 2010.


The Debating Society members have won 117 awards, including individual participation awards, in debates and declamation competitions.

The 14 speakers who have been representing the university during this period secured 22 Best Team trophies and 34 Best Speaker awards.

Prof Ikramul Haq, the GCU acting vice chancellor (VC), addressed the students at the event. He said that the preparation and delivery of arguments provided students with the opportunity to think critically and develop research and communication skills, besides boosting their self-confidence.

The VC promised the best training as well as opportunities to compete at international level.

Zulqarnain Cheema, the GCU Debating Society president, said that the GCU teams had competed with institutions like the Pakistan Air Force College, Risalpur; the University of Engineering and Technology; Forman Christian College University, Chand Bagh School, Beconhouse, Lahore Grammar School and the Lahore University of Management Sciences.

He said that GCU had also secured 17 ‘distinctions’ at the Chief Minister’s Speech Contest. He hoped that the GCU teams would this year break their record of winning 148 competitions during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Those awarded shields on the occasion were Ali Zafar, Saadul Hassan, Kamran Hussain, Ahmed Chaudhry, Umair Mushtaq, Jawad Ali Abid, Umar Gee Saleemi, Ali Gee Saleemi, Zulqarnain Cheema, Almas Sabeeh Saqib, Gadhaun Salam, Ahsan Raza, Shoaib Ahmed and Muneeb Raza.
