Dasti now eligible to contest elections

LAHORE: Lahore High Court's Multan Bench dismissed two petitions against Jamshed Dasti. He is now eligible to contest elections.

Dasti had resigned from his parliamentary seat last month when the degree based on which he contested the general elections in 2008 proved to be fake.

But, the ruling PPP awarded him a ticket again to contest from the same NA 178 Muzzaffargarh-111 constituency as contenders are no longer required to hold a bachelors degree in order to contest.

Speaking in the National Assembly on Thursday, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had said that the issue of fake degrees is a conspiracy to malign the parliament and urged members to thwart it.

egregious khan | 13 years ago | Reply what a shameful and biased role , our judiciary is playing! first it disqualified the mna nazir jut on the same reson for fake degree but now allowing the the jamshed dasti. we need some reforms in our biased judiciary for the survival of our society. it seems as decisions are being made not according to rule of law , but according to rule of necessity.there many other such decisions where some one becomes astonished.

Mateen | 13 years ago | Reply It was a stupid idea of the former General (R) Pervez Musharraf to make conditional for the political opponents to be at least holds graduate degrees to contest national elections. This law was particularly made to keep the political opponents out of the political ring. The whole Pakistan has seen what professor’s assembly during General (R) Musharraf’s rule have done well for Pakistan? The graduate or professors assembly consisting of Maters Degree holders and PhD’s could not add a single kilowatt of electricity during the former President’s rule which lasted about 9 years. During a meeting with Raza Rabbani at Pakistan Press Foundation, while he was in opposition, he told me that when PPP will come in to power, the graduate condition will be removed. I am glad that PPP has removed the stigma, as no where in the world there is a rule for candidates to at least hold graduate degree. It is not necessary that a graduate should have political acumen and the rest are just bunch of people who cannot understand politics or cannot legislate? I have serious doubts about the political acumen of those people who are in favour that politicians should hold graduate degrees. Politics and degrees are two separate matters. The issue of degrees and politics are two separate issues and should not be intermingled with each other; otherwise, it will be equivalent to admitting politics in third graded general ward of any hospital in the country.

Tαnzeel | 13 years ago | Reply Had LHC not allowed Dasti to contest elections, Imran Khan would have also been barred from taking part in elections. Imran's disqualification for being a member of the National Assembly as under the laws of the land that no person involved in such extra-marital (as per Rules of Procedure Clause 16 )affairs could contest elections or continue as a member of parliament. Imran’s ineligibility may be verified by the then ruling of Los Angeles Superior Court that had declared on July 30, 1997, that Imran Khan was father of a daughter of Anna Luise alias Sita White born out of wedlock.

How a man like Mr. Dasti, Raja Riaz and many others can communicate who even can't understand the official documents of their OWN offices.
