Silent community

Letter January 21, 2017
The tragedy of Ayesha in Peshawar and the flogging of transgenders in Sialkot highlighted the plight of this community

WAH: Transgenders are one of the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in Pakistan. Begging on the roads and dancing at weddings is the only source of income they have in Pakistan. Over the years, this community has been maltreated brutally as various cases of abduction, rape and murder are heard. The tragedy of Ayesha in Peshawar and the flogging of transgenders in Sialkot highlighted the plight of this community but unfortunately, their calls are unheard and will continue to be ignored unless our media sheds light on this sensitive issue.

Over the past five years or so, this issue has seen a lot of consideration on social media as our nation has finally begun to raise a voice concerning these issues that we previously used to disregard completely. We, as the ambassadors of the coming generation, request the Government of Pakistan to take strict actions against offenders and give rights, security, and opportunities to offer a better quality of life to this underprivileged and silenced community.
