Discrimination against women

Letter January 23, 2017
We must make sure that we ourselves are not discriminating

ISLAMABAD: It frustrates me to no end when I see that even in 2017, there is blatant discrimination against women. One would think that at least in today’s era, women would be free to do as they please and enjoy the same rights as men do but this has been a lost cause.

The problem, however, arises on a more personal scale. To tackle discrimination against women, we must make sure that we ourselves are not discriminating between our daughters and sons. We need to make sure that we are exposing them to the same level of education rather than sending our sons to better institutions than our daughters on the assumption that he will be supporting the family one day while she will become some other man’s burden to bear. Change comes from within. We need to eradicate discrimination against women from our homes first in order to see women as mere equals to men.
