Constitutional amendment

Laws are amended to suit the interest of a few individuals

GUJRANWALA: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice has given the go-ahead to the 24th Amendment to the Constitution, which will give right of appeal to any aggrieved party against an order of the Supreme Court taken up under the top court’s jurisdiction in Clause 3 of Article 184 of the Constitution. What great timing and tactics by the government in favour of the prime minister. One must not be surprised about such an amendment because in our country, personalities are more important than the Constitution. We are such an ill-fated nation that does not even mind such moves by the government. Laws are amended to suit the interest of a few individuals. The Tax Amnesty Bill, the Pakistan Commissions of Inquiry Bill 2016 and now the 24th Amendment all carry favour in one form or the other for the ruling elites and wealthy lots of the country. Do we still live in a democracy?
