Student murder-suicide case

Letter January 08, 2017
I support the protests demanding justice

KARACHI: On the eve of the new year, regional and national newspapers reflected the news of suicide of a student at the University of Sindh. The news spread like fire and raised many questions which are still unanswered, like why the student was in her hostel when the university was supposed to remain closed until January 1. Secondly, without investigation, it is suspicious that the death was labelled a suicide. The details do not add up as friends allege that her room was not the one she was found in and that she was an otherwise successful student, which is all the more reason to first study the case. Although the parents have denied it, all theories need to be ruled out first, including karo kari threats.

I support the protests demanding justice. Parents should be able to feel safe about sending their children to schools and universities. I also appeal to the chief minister and inspector-general of Sindh to constitute a committee to probe this either murder or suicide as the confidence of the people may be reposed about sending their children to university.
