Heart of Asia Conference

Letter December 08, 2016
This would have further conveyed the message to India about our feelings towards them

ISLAMABAD: The Adviser on Foreign Affairs Mr Sartaj Aziz paid a visit to India to participate in the Heart of Asia Conference in Amritsar. Everything from the hotel stay to meeting times are scheduled and known in advance. I wonder why the adviser did not avail the Wagah Border to travel to Amritsar. After all, Amritsar is not that far off from the Pakistan border — only 30 kilometres. Surely, this would have avoided the acrimony and ill-feeling which the adviser brought back after attending the conference.

What Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said caused even more heartache. He was forgetting the agony and suffering that Pakistani Pakhtuns shared with Afghan nationals providing shelter to three million people uprooted from their war-torn country for 30 long years, still with no end in sight. This would have further conveyed the message to India about our feelings towards them.
