Food not for all

Letter December 04, 2016
I come across many people who suffer from food deprivation

ISLAMABAD: The Barilla Centre for Food and Nutrition’s (BCFN) 7th International Forum on Food and Nutrition took place in Milan on December 1. The Forum focused on the major global themes and challenges included in the Milan Protocol, established in 2013. The theme of the Forum was “Eat better, eat less, food for all,” and brought together researchers, civil society, and policymakers to discuss the future of the food system. The conversation focused on developing a food model that protects the health of individuals, communities, and the planet through practical proposals and effective measures to tackle hunger and obesity, the use of natural resources, food waste, the environmental impact of agricultural production, and climate change.

It is apt to mention here that the Milan Protocol sets three objectives: to promote healthy lifestyles and fight obesity, to promote sustainable agriculture, and to reduce food waste by 50 per cent by the year 2050. On the contrary, our ruling class, bureaucrats and technocrats in Pakistan believe “Eat whatever comes from taxpayers’ money or the national exchequer.” I don’t solely speak of Thar, which is experiencing famine; even in the federal capital, I come across many people who suffer from food deprivation.

In Pakistani society, hardly a few individuals or organisations are working towards a more selfless attitude by spending their time and other resources for the destitute, hungry and thirsty people, estimated to be in the millions.
