Risking lives to get to work

ISLAMABAD: The recently renovated and traffic signal-free road from Karal Chowk to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Airport, Rawalpindi added more luxury for VVIPs, who can now move more briskly with their squads when traveling in the city.

However, it has made life for pedestrians crossing that road daily more miserable than before. Every day, hundreds of people cross over this road to reach to their workplaces, schools and universities, but there is not a single pedestrian overhead bridge available for them to safely cross the road.

This road is the only main road that connects Islamabad highway’s traffic to the airport and other areas of Rawalpindi Cantt. Every day, individuals risk their lives accessing this road during traffic hours just to get to work or school. The heavy flow of traffic on this road is uncontrollable.

Unfortunately, the city planners are deaf when it comes to this problem, despite the graveness of the issue. I would request Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other high officials to take up the matter at the earliest and build at least two overhead pedestrian bridges on this road to protect human lives.
