Transgender discrimination

Letter November 19, 2016
They should be made part of our communities

KARACHI: In the 21st century where human beings and animals have their due rights provided by various governments of the world, our society and country still lack. Here, exist groups and parties who promote and support gender discrimination. I am pointing towards the recent incident in Sialkot with a transgender who was brutally “beaten and gang raped.”

In our society, members of the transgender community have been thrown out of their homes because we do not consider them to be a part of our communities. It is confusing that being an Islamic state, our society thinks transgender persons are born out of their own will. Meanwhile, we also believe that a higher being has created all of us. So, why is there such a disconnect?

In developed countries, such communities have been given rights by their respective governments. They are incorporated into society. Why can’t our government provide them proper rights and safe institutes where they can learn and can work for themselves in a respectable manner? They should be made part of our communities and then can contribute to our gross domestic product.
