Rise in Islamabad street crimes

Letter November 18, 2016
Police agencies should keep a strict check and balance and deal with criminals

ISLAMABAD: I am infuriated at the increase in street crimes in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, whether it is mugging, pickpocketing, armed robbery or assaults. A further increase in crime will cause more dangers and problems and people will be afraid to come out of their homes. Recently, in the sector I live in, G-7, more than 15 street crimes took place, including forceful snatching of mobile phones, wallets and motorcycles. People who are poor and unemployed walk on this path to earn bread and butter for their families.

Firstly, police agencies should keep a strict check and balance and deal with criminals with an iron fist. If they are guilty of crime, they should be given their deserved punishment. Secondly, the government should create job opportunities for people so that they do not resort to such violence. Thirdly, people who are already employed should be paid adequately, based on inflation and rising costs of goods.
