Stop blaming others

Letter November 18, 2016
Short cut remedies will not be beneficial for the long-term

KARACHI: In a country where the police system works under political influence, there is rare hope of any improvement. After the Afghan conflict, an immense quantity of illegal weapons was smuggled into the country. Since that era, we have been blaming foreign countries for all such things. The time has come to carry out our own fair trial, rather than continue blaming others.

For decades, we have been compromising on things that brought our country to this level and kept the Pakistan-Afghanistan border open. Now, illegal weapons are spread all over the country contributing to a terrible law and order situation. Not a single government took initiative to combat this menace due to corruption and a politicised police system.

Each political party protects its own wings, areas and workers instead of introducing bills in the National Assembly against illegal weapons and getting them approved. This will never happen in Pakistan because we are our own enemies. The electoral system totally failed in Pakistan as the same people and parties get elected again. Illegal weapons are a great source for creating fear and a show of power on opponents. There is only hope from the army now. It must seal borders and give a deadline to surrender all illegal weapons. Without recovery of illegal weapons, an end to political influence on our police system and good governance, our dream of peaceful Pakistan will never come true. Short cut remedies will not be beneficial for the long-term.
