KARACHI: A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) granted on Monday a three-week protective transitory bail to Moonis Elahi, a Punjab Assembly lawmaker and son of former chief minister Parvaiz Elahi.

Chaudhry Moonis Elahi was wanted by FIA in the NICL scam and a banking court at Lahore had issued non-bailable arrest warrants against him. He is accused of getting Rs320 million out of Rs2.75 billion in two shady land deals by NICL.

The SHC division bench comprised Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai and Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar.

On Monday, Akhtar Hussain and Masood Ghani appeared on behalf of the accused and submitted that their client had been falsely implicated in the alleged corruption case.

The counsel maintained that the accused was willing to return to Pakistan and face the cases against him but the state was gearing up to arrest him in a bid to humiliate his family.

They requested the court to grant protective and transitory bail to facilitate the accused’s surrender before the trial court, adding that they feared that the authorities would arrest their client as soon as he landed anywhere in Pakistan.

When deputy attorney-general Ashique Raza did not object to the request of Moonis Elahi’s lawyers, the court admitted the accused to a bail against a solvent surety of Rs700,000 and an equal amount in personal bond.
