Call for sanity

One only hopes that time will heal all these wounds

MUMBAI: India’s actions on the India-Pakistan Indus Waters Treaty and the Islamabad South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit should be handled with care. One only hopes that time will heal all these wounds, paving the way for a better future for both India and Pakistan.

I have been shocked at reading the news about import and export trade between the two countries being severely affected due to the bitter relationship and wonder why the unfortunate official apathy had come in the way of doing business, thereby causing great losses to both countries unnecessarily.

My first-ever job involved export and import business transactions in my native place of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, India. We procured usable material and foodstuff from areas like Tuticorin, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Marthandam and Nagercoil, all in Tamil Nadu and shipped them to their different destinations, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Singapore. It was a peaceful business venture. Likewise, India and Pakistan have had resources to trade in abundance. However, bad politics and lethargic attitudes have taken a heavy toll on the wealth index of both countries.

It is the responsibility of the powers that be of India and Pakistan to take serious steps in matters of nurturing good rapport and strengthening economic activity between the two countries. Farsighted vision is the need of the hour.
