RAWALPINDI: Students brought Valentine’s cards and flowers on Monday to the detained self-confessed killer of one of Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer.

Supporters of Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri gathered outside the high-security prison in Rawalpindi, where he was to appear before an anti-terrorism court.

Outside Adiyala prison, about 140 people rallied in support of Qadri, joined by 10 students from a government college who turned up with posters, Valentine’s cards and flowers.

“Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Mumtaz Qadri,” read one placard.

They handed over flowers and cards to jail officials who said they would give them to Qadri, as students from religious schools shouted “Free Qadri!”.

“We admit it is not our tradition and it is wrong to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but it is now widely celebrated and the media is full with Valentine’s Day activities,” student Hussain Ahmed, 22, told AFP at the jail.

“We love Qadri because he loves the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and that is why we have brought flowers and Valentine’s Day cards for him,” Ahmed said.

Qari Hanif Qureshi, a firebrand speaker and apparent inspiration for Qadri, also said Valentine’s Day was not Muslim.

“It is wrong to celebrate it, but since these students have come to express their love and support for Qadri, we cannot turn them away,” Qureshi told AFP.

Wow now talk about irony right there. The height of ignorance about the teachings of Islam…wait can we even call it ignorance when he admitted its wrong in Islam and the Prophet said not to add these innovations to our religion? Oh but does this guy think that celebrating Valentine’s Day in order to make the guy who, in his insane mind, thought he was defending the Prophet happy and feel loved is okay? The signs of an open and non conservative society is for people to express their feelings, whether right or wrong (of course within limits of law and Islam). I think what this story shows is a good sign (as well as bad, for obvious reasons). We have people who support a murderer and I guess have similar feelings against Mr Taseer’s views that this murderer had, and are allowed to express it.

But ofcourse they didn’t agree with Mr Taseer’s right to express his opinions, which is really bad! We are unfortunately living in a society where some of Islam’s teachings are followed to the extreme (re-assessment of blashphemy law) while other Islamic teachings are totally ignored (killing one Muslim is same as killing all Mulsims).

In any case, this accused should be dealt with with regards to the law (preferrably Islamic law, but that seems to be hand-picked in our country).Recommend

Read about the numerous falst killings and false accusations made against innocent people in the name of Islam; the real reason being to gain dominance or revenge over others over petty matters.

Nothing symbolizes Pakistan’s precipitous fall into the lap of extremism and intolerance than this news item does.
This piece of news will be splashed on the front pages of every nation in the West. Whichever way you look at it, Qadri is a cold-blooded killer. The fact that he was a guard who killed the very person he was supposed to protect is an even greater sin. I truly believe it is just a matter of time before we have extremists ruling Pakistan. For a nation that was tipped to be a SE Asian Tiger by a Swedish study group in the late fifties, the fall of Pakistan has been stunning. Recommend

Please talk on facts and figures. He murdered Taseer, but are you ever able to talk to Qadri that why he did so. You are saying a BIG NO because what you say is what Media has broadcast-ed.

Let the court decide it. The Valentine Celebrators, in this scenario are neither GAY (jokers) nor Hippocrates. The are just expressing the love for the person. You may have seen people crying over Taseer body, do you say them GAY too?

    Please think before you speak.

@mughal: OMG, please do tell me this, did our Prophet kill them without hearing them for the crime they committed against him?

Tell me this also, did our prophet (PBUH) kill they women who use to throw garbage on him when he use to pass from her street? If my memory serves me right, he went to check on her they day she didn’t throw garbage on him & due to this gesture by him she converted to Islam, didn’t she?

Please Mr. Mughal, do think before you speak or write in this case.

We should be spreading Islam through our good deeds, what Qadri has done is only brought shame on the name of Islam.Recommend

These so called right wing people are uneducated, immoral . They are the sole reason for defaming Islam> Blasphemy law needs to be amended and I salute Sherry Rehman because she was brave enough to try for it. And those who sent valentine gifts to that insane Qadri should read the story of the time when Prophet SAW conquered Makkah. The message of Islam of mercy and compassion has to be given to these barbarians. We need to have a law that no one can be an Imam of a masjid if he is not atleat BA Islamiat.Recommend

There is something more to it. Because it is too easy to prevent this and specially to prevent this from appearing in the media. For instance, the very episode of bringing the killer to a place where he could be showered with petals. All this could have been avoided very easily and it is done in various cases as a matter of routine.

All this seems too orchestrated. Somebody wants to keep extremism alive to be able to play with it for negotiations at an international level and to keep a rationale for military presence in policy making institutions. As all this only weakens governance.

First of all Valetine’s Day isn’t even celebrated in Islam. These fundamentalists need to get their facts right. Loving the Prophet(p.b.u.h) doesn’t mean he could kill in the name of Islam. This is forbidden in our religion. He could’ve used the law system instead. Illiterate people trying to make some sense. That’s all i can say.Recommend

    Raymond Davis & Mumtaz Qadari..
Davis, murderer of two Pakistani citizens & Qadari, murderer of one Pakistani, both must be trialed & convicted under 302 PPC by the Court of law… exception for any assassin..Davis believes he acted under self defence..Qadari deems acted under a self assumed religious notion..both were judges of their own cause, let this matter be for the court of law, across the board..our nation has divided in poles apart sections as some sections believe on their own ideas & believes, not on rule of law..can one imagine attacks on shrines & killings of dozens innocent citizens there are appreciated & justified by some sections ?? Yes it is there on account of sectarian differences. Political, religious & social bifurcation have caused havoc for Pakistan. What id solution? Rule of law… Recommend
