Unaffordable mangoes

Letter September 20, 2016
Governments worldwide where mangoes are grown in large quantities should set affordable prices

TURBAT: The mango season has just about ended. For lovers of this king of fruits, it has become very difficult to buy it. In fact, the price of mangoes has seen a threefold increase this year. Despite the price hikes every year, most people rush to purchase mangoes. The poor, unfortunately, cannot afford it though. Despite the low yield in the finishing season, the fortunate farmers are smiling as they are getting over Rs100,000 per tonne compared with Rs25,000 to Rs30,000 the previous year in most countries. Most buyers aren’t interested and are shying away only because the prices are about 30 to 40 per cent higher compared with the previous season.

Governments worldwide where mangoes are grown in large quantities should set affordable prices so that every mango lover can taste its sweetness.
