PESHAWAR: The vehicle verification system (VVS) stopped working after the police department cancelled the contract with a cellular company, while there is also lack of up-to-date data on stolen or snatched vehicles.

While speaking to The Express Tribune on Sunday, a police official said data on stolen vehicles was collected by the Islamabad police, while a local cellular company took the initiative to make it available to buyers through SIMs offered in the market.

“The problem was with the database. We continued to recover stolen vehicles, but there was no mechanism in place to correct the record and update it,” he said.  He added this was causing a lot of problems.

Similarly, another police official said they had been provided with SIMs to check vehicles, but they found out that the VVS failed to verify vehicles most of the time and delivered incorrect information about registration.

“When these complaints increased, senior police officials decided to halt the verification service and recalled all the SIMs.” Meanwhile, another police official told The Express Tribune, “We discovered that the information sent to us by the cellular phone company was incorrect and it caused a lot of problems for us as well as the public. Therefore, we decided to cancel the contract with that company.”

“We have decided to acquire SIMs from a new company this time,” he said.
