Towards prosperity: SBBWU celebrates 12th foundation day

Varsity geared towards increasing female participation in education

PESHAWAR: Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar (SBBWU) celebrated its 12th foundation day with fervour on Thursday.

The university was decorated with colourful flowers and artwork made by students. The students of various departments displayed their final year projects, attracting a large number of visitors—scholars, students, staff and teacher—to their stalls.  Speeches, theatrical performances and songs also entertained the audience at the varsity.

On the occasion, SBBWU Peshawar Vice Chancellor Dr Professor Razia Sultana said the global perspective of education demanded more opportunities in the field of higher education be provided to women.



She said the university had taken steps to provide more human resources to fill the economic and social gap left due to little female participation in education during the last decade.

The VC also said safety of students and security of the university had been given a higher priority. She informed the participants that security guards have been given latest weapons and security check posts were being constructed in different places at the varsity. Sultana added the government had also provided SBBWU with police personal to enhance protection.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Executive Director Dr Ghulam Raza Bhatti who was the chief guest on the occasion, distributed 12 laptops among the MPhil and PhD students under the Prime Minister laptop scheme.

He said since the inception of the programme, the HEC had distributed around 98,000 laptops in the first phase of the scheme. He added more than 100,000 laptops were to be distributed in the second phase.

Addressing participants, K-P Secretary for Technical Education Farah Hamid Khan said SBBWU Peshawar had an outstanding track record in the field of high education. She said the institution will be the best place to fill the gap left by little female participation in education. “Educated female staff will increase the long term prosperity of the country,” Farah Hamid said. ‘
