In praise of corruption

Letter August 21, 2016
I strongly believe that the day this nation learns to protect the rule of law, that will be the end of corruption

ISLAMABAD: Most people in this country think and speak extensively on the monster of corruption — though they too steal public money in one form or another. Else, how can a subdivisional officer or any other official of the same or lower grade have their own palatial bungalows in posh localities in Islamabad along with several luxurious cars?

Corruption is key to personal growth and development in this society. No one corrupt is cast off by our rulers; he is adored and elevated. Though they cause irreparable loss to the national exchequer, our rulers exhibit compassion for them and protect and promote them. So great is our ruling classes’ unfailing love for the corrupt lot.

Like many others, my soul is weary with sorrow when I witness corrupt-to-the-core officials being upgraded, promoted and given repeated extensions. All the while, those at the helm of affairs never bother to correct the system. I strongly believe that the day this nation learns to protect the rule of law, that will be the end of corruption altogether. However, I don’t say this with optimism that such a day will arrive in the near future because the overall situation in Pakistan is not conducive to a society that is free of dishonesty and exploitation, any time soon.
