A generation of lawyers lost

Letter August 13, 2016
Another scholarship programme should be initiated for the family members of the deceased

KARACHI: The tragedy that unfolded at Civil Hospital, Quetta on August 8 has robbed Balochistan of an entire generation of lawyers. To make matters worse, by most accounts, the majority of the deceased young lawyers were first-generation educated. The bar councils of all provinces should immediately set up a scholarship fund for aspiring lawyers — with the express condition that they practise in Quetta for five years after graduating. Separately, another scholarship programme should be initiated for the family members of the deceased so that they can pursue professional education as well. The province of Balochistan is at a crossroads in its history and the legal fraternity has to play a significant role in its progress; hence, such a vacuum cannot be left unaddressed.
