Latham registered his fourth Test century while Williamson made 91 as New Zealand moved to 315-4 at the close of play. The pair added 156 for the second wicket, but were eventually parted when Latham chased a wide delivery from Hamilton Masakadza and was caught behind for 105.
Williamson then fell to leg-spinner Graeme Cremer, before Donald Tiripano used the second new ball to get rid of Henry Nicholls.
Zimbabwe Neil before Wagner
Ross Taylor (38) and nightwatchman Ish Sodhi (five) were at the crease on stumps.
After dismissing Zimbabwe for a paltry 164 on day one, courtesy of fast-bowler Neil Wagner’s six-for, New Zealand are heavy favourites in the match and have already established a lead of 151 runs.
Change in leadership: Williamson to take the Black Caps’ helm
New skipper Williamson will in all likelihood be looking to claim a big enough lead to ensure that the visitors do not have to bat again to claim a 1-0 lead in the series.
