Tunisia, Egypt and Pakistan

Letter February 03, 2011
I ardently wish that our culture, society and intellectual tradition blossom brightly so that we can also prosper.

ISLAMABAD: Air vice-marshal Shahzad Chaudhry's comparison of Tunisia and Egypt with Pakistan, in his article “Pakistan will not go Tunisia or Egypt’s way” (February 2), is sound. The factors he has highlighted are all crucial to the analysis. I ardently wish that our culture, society and intellectual tradition blossom brightly so that we can also prosper. However, in light of recent happenings in the country, this seems a forlorn hope. I also agree wholeheartedly with Nadia Naviwala in her piece “Veena Malik and social tyranny” where she describes the closed mentality found in many people in Pakistan. Regrettably, these voices are akin to the proverbial cry in the wilderness.
