LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) wants early construction of Kalabagh Dam as reported in the press. Please note that the reservoir level at maximum storage will be 25 feet below Nowshera and not 150 feet as reported; it is only when the reservoir is drawn down during the flood season that it will be 150 feet below Nowshera.
Categorising opponents of Kalabagh Dam as enemies of the country is a bad strategy and does more harm than good. Most people oppose the dam because their leaders have misled them due to their own ignorance that Sindh will become a desert and Nowshera will drown. These are misconceptions.
Actually, south Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan will soon be drowning because Kalabagh Dam has not been built and it is the only dam that can moderate the floods of the river-sized tributaries of the Indus, namely Kabul, Chitral, Swat, Haro and Soan. Thus, it is important that the matter of construction of Kalabagh Dam is not delayed and that the LCCI is supported in its calls for early construction.
