EU facing existential threat?

Letter July 01, 2016
Henry Kissinger warned America of the emerging threat of the EU and euro

SIALKOT: When I was in Germany some time back, I often debated the future of the European Union (EU) with my friends and I always felt the future of the body to be fragile and that Britain will be the first to leave it. The victory for the Brexit camp in the UK has only proven these fears to be true.

I had read Henry Kissinger’s forecast for the EU’s future. He warned America of the emerging threat of the EU and euro “which Washington shall have to confront, after tackling Islamic terrorism”.

Far-right nationalists across Europe are now calling for referendums in their respective countries where they can vote to quit the EU. Within hours of the referendum result being made public, the UK economy lost over £255 billion, the equivalent of 40 years’ worth of EU contribution. Towards the middle of the ongoing century, one will see a sea of changes in the dynamics of Europe and America.
