Decline of Britain?

Brett vote by Britain came as a rude shock not only to the EU but to most politicians in Britain as well

LONDON: The vote in favour of Brexit by Britain came as a rude shock not only to the EU but to most politicians in Britain as well. It seems even those who had been campaigning for it are dumbstruck now by their success. The referendum was a promise by David Cameron in his election campaign and making good of his promise will now cost him his job. Why did this happen? Was the loss of national sovereignty the reason? Or was it the rejection of Tony Blair’s and Cameron’s policy of joining the war against terror that turned Great Britain into a banana republic of the US? Or was it due to scaremongering headlines regarding the migrant crisis and job losses? In that case, the British public is in for a rude shock when Germany and France take away Nissan and a bunch of other manufacturing units from their country, adding to job losses.

Tourism, visa and education are perhaps the major sources of earning for the UK, but on June 26 when I arrived in that country from Frankfurt at 8.30am, I experienced firsthand how Britain is losing its edge. When I arrived there was complete chaos at Border Security where we were pushed into a roped jigsaw puzzle-like queue standing in severe heat without air-conditioning and when I got out the time was nearing 11.20am. There were ladies, children and elderly people tired of this catwalk. The excuse for this drama was shortage of staff that reflected the bad governance of David Cameron’s government. It was a normal Sunday and a regular flight. How come Heathrow has become unmanageable under this government? It seems that Britain needs to focus more on home policy issues than on Nato warfare.
