Learning from the UK

There should be a similar vote in Kashmir, so that those living there can make their own decision as to what they want

KARACHI: Recently, Britain voted to exit the European Union (EU). Whatever the reason may have been, or whatever the consequences may be, it just demonstrates the unmatchable democracy practised in the UK. The people demanded change and they got it. This is true democracy; for the people, by the people.

Why can’t Pakistan follow Britain’s example? We have adopted so many aspects of British culture, from their style of dressing, to their movies and their language. Yet we have failed to assume any of the virtuous qualities of the British and their system. Just like their democracy, their lack of lust for power is evident from the resignation of David Cameron, as is their law and order model, their merit-based appointments and the fact that citizens can vote without any danger to their lives. I yearn for the day when our leaders let go of their power-hungry nature and for a change, start thinking about Pakistanis and their rights.

There should be a similar vote in Kashmir, so that those living there can make their own decision as to what they want. Is this too much to ask for? The prime minister and the other leaders of Pakistan must come out of their ivory towers, let go of their greed and for once, think of us. We are the ones who elected you. According to Mohammad Ali Jinnah, you are the servants of the people, not the other way around. I make an appeal to all leaders to put the cause of Kashmir on the table and to let its people decide their future.
