KARACHI: Philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi will undergo a minor 20-minute surgery at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) today.

According to Edhi’s spokesperson, Anwar Kazmi: “The operation was supposed to be performed on Monday, however, the doctors were not able to reach on time due to the Youm-e-Ali procession.”

Edhi has been a dialysis patient since more than three years.

“The operation is being conducted in order for the dialysis line, which is currently choked, to function properly,” said Kazmi.

Edhi’s son, Faisal Edhi confirmed that his father had a minor catheter change surgery but Bandar road was closed because of the Youm-e-Ali procession, postponing the surgery to today.

“The procedure is 20 minutes long and Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi and Fazal will be directly involved in handling his [Edhi] case,” said Faisal. Edhi’s dialysis will resume after the surgery, he added.

Commenting on Edhi’s health, Kazmi said, “His health is good in general but his kidneys are functioning poorly.”

He said that all other organs are functioning properly and Edhi is in better shape than before.

“He [Edhi] is talking to people, meeting them and having food as he likes,” said Kazmi, adding that Edhi is not on any form of restrictive diet from the hospital.
