Britain and the EU: a mystifying relationship

Letter June 21, 2016
Britain exiting the EU will bring many hurdles for the country

KARACHI: A great wave of debate, on whether to continue its membership in the European Union (EU), has arrived in the British parliament. David Cameron is willing to give the EU relationship another chance. However, some people from his own party are in favour of Brexit. Britain has been contributing a lot to the EU, but it was never a one-sided contribution. The EU brought many advantages to Britain in the form of investment, market, capital, employment, security and defence. On the whole, the EU provided a lot more than one’s expectations.

The US suggests that Britain should maintain its affiliation with the Union. EU member countries also emphasise thinking over the option of an exit as this decision will bring many far-reaching and unpleasant consequences. They also think that after a long journey together that has seen many ups and downs, one should support the Union and its firmness and unity. Britain exiting the EU will bring many hurdles for the country. In the era of globalisation, where cooperation and interdependence are key to survival, such decisions could cost big time.
