Women’s rights issues

Letter June 20, 2016
The cardinal feature on which Islam established itself was equality and justice

KARACHI: The world is surely moving ahead but on the contrary, here in Pakistan, we are regressing towards an age of ignorance like never before. Whatever progress we think we have made as a nation is futile until or unless we ensure the protection, equality and justice for each and every individual of the country, especially women.

If burning women in the name of honour wasn’t enough, now they are being insulted in parliament and on television shows. We like to be termed literate and modern but woefully, how we behave with women reflects nothing but ignorance.

The cardinal feature on which Islam established itself was equality and justice. Before it, Arabia was steeped in the worst forms of indecency. When people assumed respecting women would lower their dignity and pride, they looked upon them as inferior beings. Today, we call ourselves honourable Muslims but when it comes to giving rights to women, we fail to follow the social and moral ethics that encompass our religion. It is high time we united as citizens of the country and terminate this issue before it’s too late.
