Twist in ties with US

Letter June 17, 2016
The US continues to ignore Indian interference in Balochistan

LARKANA: Pakistan played a key role in accomplishing American geopolitical interests in South Asia during the Cold War. Besides, Pakistan, serving as a major non-Nato ally, has proved to be a vanguard in the war on terror to root out terrorism — a great threat to the tranquility of the world. The fact is that the international community has acknowledged the loss that Pakistan has suffered in showing solidarity with the US. It is clear that following American policies led to much terror and bloodshed inside Pakistani territory. Thus, terrorist acts, in other words, suicide attacks, bombings, killings and kidnappings of foreign tourists and professionals, has led the national economy into a perilous state over the last decade or so.

Despite being a solid ally, it was shocking to see the US suddenly blocking the sale of F-16s to Pakistan. It was all too easy for US lawmakers and strategists to forget the role Pakistan has played in the war on terror.

Moreover, America has shown no qualms over showing affinity to the enemies of Pakistan through endorsing India’s membership bid for the Nuclear Suppliers Group and instigating it to have an India-Iran-Afghanistan agreement on the Chabahar port to counter the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. At the same time, the US continues to ignore Indian interference in Balochistan, which is creating an unpleasant atmosphere, hindering the accomplishment of mega projects.

It is the need of the hour that the US review its policy and support Pakistan if it wants stability and peace in the region.
