DADU: The recent statements by the spokesman of the US president, Mark Toner, and his behaviour have clearly demonstrated that the American leadership strongly favours India in matters pertaining to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). The world knows that America has made every effort to help India join the NSG and did not leave any stone unturned to hinder Pakistan’s membership bid for the group directly and indirectly. Neither India nor Pakistan is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Both have now submitted their bids. If America supports India particularly, it is obviously a discriminatory step. There would be an imbalance of power in South Asia if India is granted membership of the NSG and Pakistan isn’t. This can also affect our bilateral relations with America as well as India, adversely.
Many countries such as China are not going to support such a discriminatory action. If India joins this group, then there is no harm in Pakistan joining the NSG. America should avoid such discriminatory practices and give equal importance to both countries to maintain power and peace in South Asia.
