Malaria strikes again

Balochistan has recorded the largest proportion of consultations for suspected malaria cases

TURBAT: More than one million malaria cases are registered annually. According to reports, 12 per cent of people living in the rural areas carry malaria parasites in their blood without showing symptoms of the disease.

Furthermore, Balochistan has recorded the largest proportion of consultations for suspected malaria cases, while increasing numbers of cases are also being reported in Punjab and Sindh, according to the Disease Early Warning System of the World Health Organisation and the Federal Ministry of Health.

One of the causes behind the swelling number of malaria cases include the floods that have ravaged the country regularly over the years and displaced millions of people, leaving many in poor shelters close to bodies of water, which are ideal breeding sites for Anopheles mosquitoes. The government should look into this matter and resolve the issue.
