Woman beaten up for giving birth to a girl in Khairpur district

Culprits fled after the attack, taking the newborn baby with them

SUKKUR: A woman, Shazia Mari, was seriously wounded, allegedly by her husband and other relatives for giving birth to a baby girl near Faiz Gunj in Khairpur district.

Shazia, wife of Miandad Mari a resident of village Shah Mohammad Mari situated in Kot Lalu police limits, gave birth to a baby girl. This angered her husband and other male members of the family, who attacked her with a hatchet, leaving Shazia and her mother, Bakhtawar Mari, injured. The culprits fled after the attack, taking the newborn baby with them.

The injured women were shifted to a taluka hospital where doctors referred them to Shaheed Benazirabad hospital. Kot Lalu police, on the complaint of woman's mother, lodged an FIR against Miandad Mari and his cousins Dodo Mari and others. Dodo Mari was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him into police custody for seven days.
