Justice system

Letter June 06, 2016
A strong justice system is essential to state-building and overall socio-economic development

KARACHI: “The present administration of justice system suffers from many infirmities and in the presence of those it is not easy to do justice,” remarked Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai, Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court (BHC), at a certificate awarding ceremony in the Federal Judicial Academy, Islamabad, last week. The honourable chief justice of the BHC is absolutely right but it is evident that our ruling elite, including our lawmakers, always fail to comprehend such striking and painful realties. Had successive rulers understood this truth and had the requisite political will, they would have reformed the legal and judicial sector.

Undoubtedly, a strong justice system is essential to state-building and overall socio-economic development and creation of a just, peaceful, tolerant and harmonious society. However, how can one expect our allergic to justice and transparency ruling elite to reform the system so as to enhance justice seekers’ access to the justice system?

Now some digression. With Ramazan starting and the head-spinning traffic of Karachi not disappearing anytime soon, people have a rough month ahead of them. No one appears to follow rules of traffic — and the inconvenience this causes only gets more tedious while fasting.

Karachi and other major cities can expect massive traffic jams and incidents of road rage. Through this letter, I’d like to reach out to all citizens and request them to respect the holy month and be patient while commuting on the roads.
