Protection for migratory birds

Letter May 23, 2016
I urge the government to take steps to provide protection to migratory birds and impose a ban on their illegal hunting

FAISALABAD: Bird migration is the regular seasonal movement, often north and south, undertaken by many species of birds. The demoiselle crane, also known as the koonj, is found in central Eurasia, namely, in areas near the Black Sea, Mongolia and northeastern China. These cranes and migratory ducks can also be seen in the local markets of Pakistan. They have ecological benefits as they prey on insects and weeds, thus contributing towards the betterment of agriculture.

There is a dire need for the conservation of these migratory birds and their habitats in our country. Many nations have government agencies and NGOs dedicated to wildlife conservation, which help to implement policies designed to protect wildlife. I urge the government to take steps to provide protection to migratory birds and impose a ban on their illegal hunting.
