Abbottabad honour killing

Letter May 07, 2016
I request the government to start taking action against this type of inhuman behaviour

KARACHI: It is shocking that in this age of technological advancement, so many people in Pakistan are still engaged in obsolete traditions that should never have been acceptable in the first place. It is shameful that in many areas of Pakistan, men and women are killed for the sake of honour.

Despite the fact that Pakistan has its own laws, jirgas continue to take matters into their hands. Yet again, we have another incident of honour killing. A 16-year-old girl was killed because she helped her friend elope to get married to her friend.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 1,276 incidents of honour killing were reported in the country during the period between February 2014, and February 2016, and first information reports were only filed in 400 cases. The real number of such cases may be even higher as most of the cases go unreported mainly due to cultural taboos and poor police and judicial systems.

These acts must be condemned in the strongest words. I request the government to start taking action against this type of inhuman behaviour.

Maryam Abbasi
