Ban on ‘Maalik’

Letter May 02, 2016
Pakistani government should, instead, take action against people and officers who are involved in corruption

KARACHI: The movie Maalik shows that a chief minister in Pakistan is involved in corruption. The movie exposes the corrupt side of Pakistani politicians. Some in the political class in Pakistan are displeased because the government is being constantly criticised in the movie — and therefore, placed a ban on it, considering it an insult. The government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa should be commended as it has said that it will resist the ban.

I don’t know why the political class is taking the movie so personally. There are many Indian movies in which Indian politicians have been presented as villains, such as in Gabbar is Back.

The Pakistani government should, instead, take action against people and government officers who are involved in corruption, rather than ban the movie that shows the truth. This action would, in fact, help the political class in the long run. I request the government to lift the ban on Maalik and let it be shown on the big screen again; it is a thought-provoking movie.
