Animal shelters

Letter March 12, 2016
We need to provide shelter for homeless animals and build rescue centres for them

KARACHI: It is my intention to bring a rather overlooked and perceptibly unimportant issue to your kind attention with this letter.

As far long back as I can remember, I have seen stray dogs and cats on nearly every street of Karachi. These animals wander aimlessly, often acting as menaces to local neighbourhoods and are most likely than not killed in one unfortunate accident or another.

It may not seem much of an issue because it does not impact us directly and is, therefore, ignored by most, but as a responsible citizen of this city, I know that it is my duty to focus attention towards these innocent souls dwelling on the streets with zero care from anyone.

We need to provide shelter for homeless animals and build rescue centres for them that can in turn arrange for people to adopt these animals after providing them appropriate services and curing them of diseases that they might be infected with from living on the streets.

These rescue centres are a common practice in a number of countries but they are not prominently featured anywhere in our country or city. I say it is high time that we built these shelters and rehabilitated strays. These animals are also our responsibility as citizens of this land.
