According to a handout issued by KTH, the objective of the day this year was to highlight kidney diseases in children. Students, teaching staff of KMC, KTH Medical Director Professor Dr Nadeem Khawar, KMC Dean Professor Dr Ejaz Hassan Khan, IRNUM Director Dr Rauf Khattak and KTH Head of Nephrology Professor Dr Nisar Anwar were in attendance.
Speakers stressed on raising awareness about kidney diseases and ways to prevent them. Khawar, who is a paediatrician, stressed the need for routine antenatal screening for congenital anomalies. At least 15% of such anomalies are related to the kidney.
“The risk of chronic kidney diseases can be prevented in 80% cases with timely postnatal intervention.” He said as the medical director, he was aware of the nephrology department’s workload and will provide all possible support to the department to strengthen it.
Ejaz highlighted the services provided by the Literary Society of KMC. He said Anwar had a strong and dedicated team of consultants, including Associate Professor Dr Amir Azhar and Assistant Professor Ahmad Zeb.
Nephrology in numbers
Speakers at the event lauded the services provided by the nephrology department.
The unit has 60 to 70 patients receiving specialist treatment. In 2015, the department registered 18,000 outpatients and 7,000 admissions. It was shared that more than 16,000 dialysis sessions were made possible that year with just 13 dialysis machines. This was said to be the highest numbers in service delivery in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
