Kalabagh dam

LAHORE: The parliamentarians who keep passing resolutions against the Kalabagh dam do not know that our two dams have increased river supplies by 20 million acre feet (maf), that Sindh received an additional 8.9maf, and that cultivated area in the country has increased by four million acres. Do they know that there has been no further increase in water supplies for 40 years, that the Kalabagh dam will add another 6.1maf, that Sindh will get an additional 2.257maf, that it will not become a desert, that there will be no ill-effects on the Indus delta, that Punjab will get only its due share, the same as Sindh, and that this share has been reduced to increase Sindh’s share in all future dams?

Do our parliamentarians know that there is surplus flow in our rivers for a very short period, that there is very little flow for a much longer period, and that it is important that the surplus is stored in dams during the Kharif period? Do they know that more people will be displaced in Punjab than in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) if the Kalabagh dam is built and that more land will be submerged in Punjab than in K-P?

Can the future of the country be put in the hands of people who don’t know any of the above? All they believe is that Punjab will take all the water from the Kalabagh dam and that Sindh will become completely barren, that the Indus delta will deteriorate further, and that Nowshera will be flooded. They also believe that land will be submerged, displacing people. I am sure there must be many in the PPP who know all the facts but are keeping mum to save their own skins, never mind what happens to the country.

These illiterate politicians have plenty of money for their generations. They do not not know ABC of Dams and water flows. Even this government is shaky and fears to talk about Kalabagh Dam. It is up to every Pakistani to protest. The best way will be to shout “KalaBagh” at 9 PM every night and it should become a sloganRecommend

Good idea. Politicians have failed us, we can only look up to the media, both print and electronic, to educate public opinion, also, more people should write to the papers.Recommend

China has built 86,000 dams on her rivers since independence 6 decades ago. 86,000 DAMS for hydroelectricity producing 3 GW. I donot know how many zeros after 3 in 3 GWs. On one river, Mekong there are already 10 dams with 10 more planned. Environment damage aside, that is how united nation stands as a great country. We, Pakistanis, are a bunch of confused people, divided on cultural and linguistic lines being united by geography and keen to tear apart at a moment’s notice. The concept Pakistan is causality, almost collateral.Recommend

I think the issue of dams, especially Kalabagh dam will not be solved by “shouting”. The controversy is not only political, it is socio-technical as well. Unfortunately, a group of our elite intellectuals is being misguided about water management issues in Pakistan and talk against the dams without knowing the real facts. Still, the need is to have a serious unbiased dialogue on Kalabagh dam, conducted/facilitated by an impartial moderator.

we have had huge losses and a consistent controversy, hence, the issue deserved to be undertaken by a national civil society forum. I think, it will be a great achievement if Express Tribune can organize a debate, summarizing all type of objections and their answers/responses. Recommend

t fully agree with Zaigham Habib that it will be a great achievement if Express Tribune can organize a debate, summarizing all type of objections and their answers/responses. I would request Express Tribune to use its good offices to undertake this nation saving task.I can set the ball rolling by enunciating the many apprehensions about Kalabagh dam. Recommend
