As regards our prison system, coordination between the judiciary, police and probation department is direly needed
HAYATABAD: A strengthened system of probation and parole will definitely resolve the issue of overburdening of financial and human resources in our prison system, as was stated in a well-articulated article, “The Neglected Probation System” by Arshad Mahmood, in The Express Tribune on February 10. Keeping in view the information shared in the article, provincial governments must promote their respective probation and reclamation departments and concentrate on creating awareness among stakeholders about the probation system and the National Judicial Policy 2009.
In the context of strengthening the probation system in the country, there is a dire need for strong coordination and information-sharing between the judiciary, the police and the probation department.
At the same time, the provincial and federal judicial academies need to play a significant role in creating much-needed understanding about the utilisation of the probation system.
The provincial governments also need to review the existing budgets for probation and prison departments and should increase the budgets accordingly to strengthen the probation system and reduce the burden in prisons.
