Bloodbath at varsity

Government officials must be made accountable for their failure to take measures to avert this kind of tragedy

RAWALPINDI: The advent of the New Year has brought with it a terrible wave of terror. Gory incidents have occurred, starting from Quetta to Peshawar to Khyber Agency and now Bacha Khan University in Charsadda has been targeted. These intermittent tragedies clearly tell us that the war on terror is far from over. After the APS ordeal, the infiltration of terrorists inside the university premises speaks volumes of the ‘good’ governance that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government boasts of. Government officials must be made accountable for their failure to take measures to avert this kind of tragedy.

This unfortunate event also speaks of the organisational underpinnings of the militant outfits in the northern part of the country. They are still capable of undertaking heinous crimes. The army top brass, including the army chief, needs to look thoroughly at what went wrong despite the initiation of Operation Zarb-e-Azb. Attacks on educational institutions must be averted. Given that Pakistan already has 25 million children out of school and that the majority of institutions only impart substandard education, such attacks are the last thing we need. These would only serve to dispirit students and parents.
