Preservation of heritage

Letter February 03, 2016
The task of conservation is immense, complex and difficult

KARACHI: Anyone with a sense of Sindh’s illustrious past will agree with the criticisms published in The Express Tribune on January 15, which noted the deplorable way the magnificent Kalhoro tomb is being conserved. Neglect and decay have taken a heavy toll on our historic monuments from Sindh’s past. This means that the task of conservation is immense, complex and difficult.

As I gather from the article, the Endowment Fund Trust (EFT) has decided to reconstruct rather than preserve what remains. This, as the news item clearly outlines, has many disadvantages and will result in a less than perfect conservation of the building. I would urge the EFT to think again and to really try to preserve this important and vital heritage building by preserving and conserving all aspects of it, particularly the tiles and the dome as near as possible to the original. Also, I urge government officials and the authorities concerned to make certain that artisans take their time in seeking as much advice as possible to get the best possible results. Sindh’s illustrious history deserves no less.
